In this niche, I found a channel that started only 4 months ago and already hits a total of more than 12M+ views. This shows that the target audience is huge, and the chances of success are really high. Plus, creating the content is simple, and there are plenty of topics to choose from. So if you enjoy making videos about the 80s and 90s, focusing on actors and actresses from then and now, this niche is perfect for you.

Starting directly with the story

The great thing about this video is that it jumps straight into the story, no long-winded intro, just straight to the point. However, a missed opportunity is the lack of a voice-over. A voice-over could make this content even more engaging for the audience and is also essential if you want to get monetized without any issues. More about this at don'ts.

Don'ts

00:00

No voice-over

As I mentioned earlier, this video doesn’t have a voice-over, which I think is a huge missed opportunity. A strong script can make a video much more engaging and keep viewers hooked. I’m not saying this format doesn’t work because the views clearly show that it does, but by adding more value to your video, you could take it to the next level. Not only does a voice-over help with engagement, but it’s also crucial if you want to monetize your content without any issues. I highly recommend including a short introduction about the person in question and using triggering hooks, something I mention in almost every niche. These hooks are a must for keeping viewers watching until the end. Another benefit of adding a script is that you won’t need to cover as many cases in one video. Instead, you can turn each case into a triggering story, which allows you to create more content in the long run.

Here are some powerful hooks you can use for this niche:

  1. But if you thought that was the craziest part, think again…
  2. What happened next? No one saw it coming.
  3. And then, they revealed something shocking…
  4. This one small detail changed everything…
  5. You won’t believe what his final words were…
  6. Just when they thought it was over, everything took a dark turn…

TITLE RATING

Title analysis

Vs. Vintage

Used title 1

<span class="text-color-red">75+</span> <span class="text-color-orange">Most Heartthrob</span> <span class="text-color-yellow">Actors</span> of the <span class="text-color-red">1980s and 1990s Then and Now!</span>

The title structure used here has already proven to be successful, with three videos reaching over a million views. This shows that the format works well for this niche. This audience is clearly interested in titles that include a specific year, especially when it comes to actors or actresses, as they enjoy seeing "Then vs. Now" transformations. Even though this might not be the exact title I would choose, it's clear that it performs well. And as I always say, it's important to stick with what works. The title structure they used goes as follows:

[NUMBER] + [TRIGGERWORD] + [NAME/TITLE] OF THE [YEAR] THEN AND NOW

Other example:

Unforgettable Hollywood Actors of the 1980s Then and Now!

Vs. Vintage

Used title 2

<span class="text-color-red">50+</span> <span class="text-color-orange">Most Beautiful</span> <span class="text-color-yellow">Actresses</span> of <span class="text-color-red">1980s and 1990s Then and Now!</span>

As you can see, they use the same title structure here, but this time focusing on actresses instead of actors. This shows that it’s not just male figures in the film industry that attract attention because actresses work just as well. At the same time, this highlights how massive this audience is, giving you even more topic options to explore. Another interesting pattern is that their second most popular video once again features the years 1980 and 1990. This confirms that these decades are strong triggers for this audience. If you’re planning to enter this niche, I’d definitely take note of that.

Vs. Vintage

Used title 3

<span class="text-color-red">70+</span> <span class="text-color-orange">Women Pop Stars</span> of the <span class="text-color-red">1970s to 1990s: Then and Now!</span>

This video follows the same title structure but focuses on female pop stars instead of actresses. This shows that the format works across different entertainment industries, not just for movie stars. With over 1M+ views, it proves that people are just as interested in seeing how music icons have changed over time. Normally, I don’t recommend using numbers in titles unless they really add something. In this case, a high number makes the title more triggering and adds a bit of a shock factor. But since I would structure the video differently by focusing more on storytelling (see video analysis), you would likely include fewer cases. That means the number wouldn’t be as useful in the title, and is also the reason I would leave it out.

Titles

Good titles contain emotional trigger words that ensure that a viewer will click your video. Emotional trigger words can be divided into 3 categories:

Curiosity (Words like: Banned, Exposed, Hidden, Illegal etc.)

Urgency/Unique: (Things like: Numbers, Limited Timed, Days etc.)
Titles: (Things like: Job titles, Family relations, Famous names etc.)

THUMBNAIL RATING

Thumbnail analysis

Vs. Vintage

Used thumbnail 1

This thumbnail achieved more than 3.6M+ views...

The thumbnail is fine, and the fact that it got more than 3.6M views proves just how powerful this niche is. But imagine if you made it even more shocking, something that practically forces people to click. They’ve done a good job by placing a "good" photo of him on the left and a more aged, and less flattering version on the right. But this contrast could be taken to a whole new level. You want to maximize the transformation, making the viewer think something like: Wait… is this REALLY the same person? No way. I need to see this -> Click. The more dramatic the change, the harder it is for people to scroll past without checking it out.

Vs. Vintage

Used thumbnail 2

❌ Wrong colors

If you're using black and white in your thumbnail, it should be for something you don’t want to stand out. So I would never recommend using a black and white photo if your goal is to grab attention. The whole point is to highlight the contrast between "then" and "now," so I honestly don’t understand why they chose a black and white image here. The photo might have originally been black and white, but in that case, I would add color in Photoshop. The whole point of a thumbnail is to grab attention, and that’s exactly what isn’t happening here.

How to find topics?

To find topics in this niche, it's important to take a good look at the competition. What topics do they cover? Which famous actors are on the thumbnails? What are the titles? Are there patterns in the most popular videos? To make it as easy as possible for you, I’ve already looked into this. When we look at the three most popular topics, we see the following:

  1. 75+ Most Heartthrob Actors of the 1980s and 1990s Then and Now!
  2. 50+ Most Beautiful Actresses of 1980s and 1990s Then and Now!
  3. 70+ Women Pop Stars of the 1970s to 1990s: Then and Now!

If you look at these topics, there’s a clear pattern with the years: the 70s, 80s, and 90s are what mainly trigger this audience. That’s why I would definitely continue focusing on that. This audience is generally older and enjoys seeing young actors from that era and how they look now.

Create a better storytelling:

As I mentioned in the title analysis, adding a script is essential to getting monetized and avoiding issues. This doesn’t mean dragging out long, boring stories, but rather creating engaging and well-structured storytelling about the person. A great way to do this is by making the audience feel emotionally invested, whether it’s through nostalgia, shocking transformations, or surprising facts. Rather than just listing names and showing images, add context to their journey. What made this actor or pop star famous? What struggles did they go through? How did they change over the years? The more immersive the storytelling, the longer people will watch. Besides, you should also include a strong transition to the next case, for example:

• But if you thought this actor changed a lot over the years, just wait... Because the next one will leave you speechless.

• But this is nothing compared to what’s coming next…

• And just when you thought you’d seen it all, the next actor’s transformation will leave you stunned...

Topic:

To create my own topic in this niche, I started searching on YouTube and eventually came across the video below. What immediately caught my attention was the thumbnail because of the way they created such a dramatic and shocking then vs now effect. I decided to watch the video, and the first case that stood out was Tim Curry. The fact that this video has gained almost half a million views in just four months proves that viewers found this topic engaging beyond just Tim Curry’s case enough. So, what if we recreate that same shocking effect with the thumbnail but make the entire video focused on Tim Curry? That’s exactly why I chose this topic.

How to create your title?

I choose to go for this title because we've seen that this structure works well at our competition channels. But because we will use less cases in one video, the number they use for every title will not have the same value as before. For that reason I choose to leave it out. The title structure I used goes as follows:

[TRIGGERWORD] + [TITLE/NAME] of the [TIME] Then and Now!

YOUR VIDEO

How to create your thumbnail?

First, I searched for a happy-looking photo of Tim Curry. Then, I focused on finding an image that showed the complete opposite. Something that created the strongest possible contrast between the two. I wanted to make the transformation as dramatic and shocking as possible. Here’s what I ended up with

Photoshop

Then, I continued in Photoshop and used the Camera Raw Filter -> Whiten -> Exposure -> Sharpen & Texture to make it stand out even more. After that, I also added a white shadow behind Curry on the left.
