Extreme Records
Why this
niche?
A channel in this niche only posted 8 videos and already earned up to $14K-$28K. If you can upload more without sacrificing the quality, there is much more possible. I also couldn't find much competition in this niche, which shows that this is a really interesting niche to jump into.

Great intro and footage
They jump straight into the story with a great hook. I keep repeating this, but it's so important to give the viewer asap what they have clicked for. People decide in the first 5 seconds if they keep watching or not, and if you don't give what the viewer has clicked for, they will be gone.

Showing the right footage at the right moments
This one seems to be a bit obvious, but in reality I see this going wrong all the time. Every time the voice-over is saying something, a clip has been shown that emphasizes what the voice-over is saying. For example, at the start: The voice-over is saying: "What you're looking at is a sporting event like you'll never see again". The editor chose to show a clip of a man on a really high stand what you don't see every day. This is a perfect example of emphasizing what the voice-over is saying, and it happens all the time in this video, see if you can spot more of these "emphasizers"

You don't need a fancy editor
This video shows that you don't need an editor who creates crazy animations and transitions. What this editor did is only showing the right clips at the right time, nothing more. So find an editor who has an eye for that and don't focus on finding editors who can create fancy transitions because it will be much more expensive if you do. And as you can see, you don't need that because this video earned 1.9M views (probably around $7600).

Showing real footage
To let your story come to life, it's important to use real footage. As obvious as it may sound, this will draw your viewer much more into your video.

Great hook question + music change
"The question is, what went down that day in 1983 and why can this record not be broken?" This is an awesome hook that keeps the viewer hooked for longer because they want to know the answers to this question. After that question is asked, they switch the music, which indicates that something new is about to happen. Great trick!
01:40
Using movies instead of stock footage
I have to say it's a bit more risky than using stock footage in terms of copyrights, but it will make your video so much better. For this timestamp, it would have been a really easy choice for the video editor to use a stock footage clip of someone who stands on a diving board like these (click "open link in new tab") that will make your video look fake. Using clips from movies are looking way better

Intro + music is too long
I like the cinematic background music during the intro because it really pulls you into the story. However, I feel it goes on a bit too long and at some point almost feels like a commercial break. For example, when the voice-over says, "But for others, it was an impending disaster, a deadly mistake with serious consequences." This part of the video has a more serious tone, so I would either suggest having the editor cut the music completely (and use only sound effects to emphasize the shift) or switch to something more serious and less cinematic.

A missed opportunity
Another video is recommended, but at first I didn't even see it. I would emphasize it a bit more by adding a simple sentence to the script like this: ' Do you want to see more like this? Then click on the video you're seeing on your screen now. And then put the recommended video in the middle because so it's more visible.

✅ Real footage
This is a perfect example showing that it's not always about the best quality, but the message you tell with your thumbnail. They used some raw footage here, which will definitely trigger the viewer, because most people who are searching on YouTube enjoy watching real footage. Besides, the picture on the thumbnail was taken right before he jumps, so there's a good chance people will want to see how it ends. They've also made it clear in the text what the height is in feet, and since it's such a shocking height, this will definitely catch the viewer's attention. The only thing I would suggest is making the text bolder, like a bright red with some black shadow, so it stands out even more than it does now. Otherwise, a great thumbnail!

✅ Triggering thumbnail
this is a good example of how I would fill in my own thumbnails in this niche. A triggering text “THIS KILLED HIM” where the focus then goes to a smaller part on the thumbnail by using an arrow. I also like the red elements on this thumbnail, but you can make them even more visible by adding some black shadow, as I explained at thumbnail 1. I also would make the text a little bigger so it's more visible than how it's now. But other than that, it's a good thumbnail.

✅ Raises questions
Great triggering text that raises a lot of questions. Great yellow highlight on the words they wanted to emphasize. Just 2/3 focus points. Great thumbnail

How do I find topics?
In this niche, it's important to take a good look at our competition channel. I must say, that during my research, I have not been able to find a channel that also focuses so specifically on extreme records. So on one hand, that's a good sign because we have a channel that shows us that it's possible and there's not much competition in this sub niche yet.
Besides, it's very important to pick the right topics to reach the right audience, because that’s actually one of the reasons why our competition channel is blowing up. At first, I thought it was all about high-altitude stuff—like diving, skydiving, or climbing. But as I continued my research, I realized it’s more about extreme records where something dramatic happens because we also have the confirmation that topics about surfing or water sports also works well.
YouTube:
As I mentioned earlier, I have yet to see another competition channel that does exactly the same thing and focuses primarily on exteme records where something happens. But the channel below (Extreme Egde Stories) is best compared to what channel Realm of Rad does. So you can definitely get some inspiration from here too, as long as you keep a good focus on activities that go wrong in the sky, deadly records or accidents on/with water activities.

ChatGPT:
You can make handy use of ChatGPT in this niche as a kind of Google Search because you can simply ask about incidents where someone wanted/has achieved a record that ended deadly. For example:
- Highest Deadly Free Fall (Vesna Vulović, 1972) – Vesna Vulović survived a fall from 10,160 meters (33,000 feet) after a plane explosion, earning her the Guinness World Record for the highest fall without a parachute.
- Highest Deadly Skydive (Michael Holmes, 2014) – Although not officially recognized as a record, Michael Holmes' skydive from 30,000 feet (9,144 meters) is one of the highest and most fatal jumps in skydiving history.
- Highest Fatal Parachute Landing (Yves Rossy, 2008) – Yves Rossy, known as "Jetman," died during a test flight of his jetpack from a high altitude. The test flight took him above 10,000 meters (32,800 feet), and a fatal malfunction led to his death.
- Deadliest Cliff Diving Record (Michel Dacoury, 1997) – Michel Dacoury set a record for cliff diving from a height of around 30 meters (98 feet) but died while attempting to break his own record.
- Highest Fatal BASE Jump (Valery Rozov, 2017) – Valery Rozov set a record for the highest BASE jump from Mount Cho Oyu (7,700 meters), but died a year later while attempting to set an even higher record.
These records are indeed recognized, though they often come with tragic consequences due to the extreme risks involved.
Important: The more real footage there is available, the better your video will become, so before choosing your topic, take a look at if there is any footage available of the event the happened.
Topic:
To find a topic for this niche, I have mainly used ChatGPT as a Google search because I have found that it makes it easier to bring up multiple results. I asked Chat the following question: Name 5 highest fatal records of people, dealing with altitude and ChatGPT and came up with this:
I then continued to research the name Valery Rozov via Google and came across the article I linked below. I also saw that there are many real images of him to be found, and that a real must. Because your topic can be good, but if there isn't enough real footage of it then it becomes very difficult. So I ended up choosing this topic because we have seen that serious events in the sky go well together with records, so this topic fits perfectly if you ask me.

How to create your thumbnail?
Because of how the title is structure, you want to show a situation that assumes something "goes wrong". So I started looking for a moment where Valery Rozov was Base-Jumping. So I found this picture:
Picture of Valery Rozov
Then I started looking for a picture of Valery Rozov. I really liked this picture because of the Red Bull logo on his hat. Red Bull is often sponsoring extreme sports and records.
Put them together + gradient
I used the base-jump picture as the background, and I cut out the picture of Valery Rozov and placed it on the left-hand side. Then I added a gradient overlay from top to bottom (black to transparent) and added some lighting over the jump-base picture and Valery Rozov.
Adding text + arrow
Then I added the text "FATAL MISTAKE" + an arrow pointing towards the base-jump to assume that something has gone terrible wrong. Other options I could have used:
HORRIBLE ACCIDENT
TERRIBLE CRASH
TRAGIC DISASTER
TRAGIC DEATH
THIS KILLED HIM
HE DIED HERE
This is the end result:

Highest records
This audience enjoys watching videos that cover the highest (deadly) records. The more extreme, the better.
Nostalgia
I have noticed in the comments that certain people in this target group are a little older, and that they mainly talk about the 80s. They enjoy going back to those good old days, and many memories come up when seeing images from those days.
