Sci-Fi Stories
Why this
niche?
In this niche, I found a channel that has only been up for 2 months and has already achieved more than 2.4M views. Besides that, there is definitely a lot of room for improvement so that you can outperform your competition. So If you love stories about Sci-fi/HFY, then this niche might be the one for you.

Competition ANALYSIS
These channels are showing potential for this niche.
This channel https://www.youtube.com/@StarboundHFY/videos shows a different side than just AI. Personally, if I were getting into this niche, I would use more human aspects for the script but also the voice-over. Many other channels only use AI for the whole video with all its consequences. You can see that by using a spokesperson, the channel StarboundHFY connects much more with the viewer, who also shows in the comments to be happy with the human aspect. Still, there are plenty of improvements to make with this channel. More about it in the let's create your video section.

Telling the story right away
No long-winded intro, but starting directly with the story, is something they do very well here. Besides that, they made the choice to directly name the year 2147 as the first sentence in their script, and that's something that can encourage the viewer to keep watching because they can get the feeling that they will see/hear a real sci-fi story. A small detail that can trigger this audience a lot.
00:00
Giving the viewer what they click for, but...
By using the same image as your thumbnail in the first seconds of your video, you make sure that the audience doesn't get the feeling that it's clickbait. You give them directly in the first second what they clicked for. But... As you can see, this is the only image they used for the whole video, and that's definitely something you can start improving. You can start telling the story with a lot of pictures (created by AI). By doing so, you can trigger this audience a lot more, and you can tell the story even better. I will go into more details about this at the 'don'ts' section

Use of subtitles, but...
By adding subtitles to your videos, the target audience can follow the story much better. They also have to focus on something, and that may cause them to watch your video longer. So that's something they do very well here. But If you take a look at the channel StarboundHFY, you will notice that their subtitles read a lot better because they use dots and commas. Although this is a small detail, I think it's not less important to mention because even these small details can cause a viewer to drop out a little faster than they normally would.

AI Voice-over
Don't get me wrong because in this niche, you can easily use AI, but you have to make sure that you check carefully, that there are no mistakes in your AI voice over. Think about the pronunciation of numbers, names, etc. For that reason, I would personally not choose for an AI voice over. Besides that, you want people to be hooked on your story and with a real voice over, the story sounds just a little more personal.
00:00
No sound effects
What I've noticed is that these videos have no background music. Because we see that this works without background music and I can imagine that it could be disturbing, I think it's best to leave that out. But what you could add is a sound effect from time to time, so that the viewer gets even better into the story, and you can trigger them even more.
00:00
No video editing at all
Using only one image per video does not trigger the viewer on many factors. Because of the storytelling aspect, the viewer gets only triggered by that. If you use multiple images, the viewer will be more hooked on the video itself without being easily distracted to something else. Just take a look at this channel: Hot African Tales. As you can see, they use a lot more AI images, and they tell the story much better.

✅ Readability
The characters in this thumbnail stand out with their detailed and colorful design. Unlike other thumbnails on this channel, this image doesn't look like its made with AI. Making it look realistic, like a scene from a movie, reduces the chance of it being seen as clickbait. And by extra blurring the background, the focus remains on the front character, making the thumbnail even more stand out.

✅ High Contrast
The high contrast of the thumbnail makes it stand out well against the black background of YouTube. Again, it appears to be an image that could be taken straight out of a movie. The bright contrasting colors highlight the character well.

How do I find topics?
IMPORTANT:
As we have seen in the comments, this audience enjoys listening/watching stories that are about HFY (Human Fuck Yeah). HFY stories highlight human qualities in various settings, showing both the good and bad sides of humanity. In these stories Humans are often referred to: Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin, Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
I found a video on this channel https://www.youtube.com/@AgroSquerril that explains exactly what HFY is all about. If you want to dive into this niche, it is important that you have a good understanding of what these HFY stories are about, so that you can trigger the audience in the right way with your titles, thumbnails and script.
You can find a lot of topic inspiration about HFY stories on:
• Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/
IMPORTANT: If you use Reddit stories in your videos, you might still encounter copyright claims. To minimize this, there are a few important ways to go around it:
- Ask for permission: One way is to reach out to the writer of the story and ask for permission to use it on your YouTube channel. This not only shows respect for their work but can also build goodwill and potentially attract more followers to your channel. For example, AgroSquerril always includes a link to the original story on Reddit in their posts, which helps to show that they're not trying to take credit for someone else's work.
- Re-write the story: Another option, although less friendly, is to find a topic on a platform like Reddit and then use AI to generate a story based on it. However, this method can sometimes result in stories with errors, as seen with the competition channel HFY Sci-fi. It's crucial to thoroughly check the output of the AI to ensure accuracy before using it in your video.
• Royal Road: https://www.royalroad.com/fictions/search?title=HFY It seems that if you mention the story and post a link to it, there's little chance of a copyright claim. You can find more information about this on their support page here.
• Fiverr: Search on the search term 'Sci Fi' or 'Sci Fi Writer' to find a scriptwriter to write original stories.
• ChatGPT: Another way is to make complete use of ChatGPT. By doing so, you avoid all possibilities of copyright claims but at the same time often lose the sentiment of the people aspect. If you only want to use this, it is important to understand what you need to provide in chatGPT to create a story. This is an example prompt that can be used in a story:
'Dan Bingham, a reclusive veteran haunted by a classified past, lives a quiet life with his feline companion. However, his world is shattered when the Kerokan, a ruthlessly efficient alien race, launches a surprise attack on a nearby colony. Dan's unique knowledge and skills from his covert operations days are desperately needed as humanity faces annihilation. As the Kerokan underestimate the defiant spirit and adaptability of the human race, Dan emerges as a cunning strategist, proving to the galaxy why humanity is a force to be reckoned with, the embodiment of the universe's worst nightmare.'
Topic:
When I'm searching for a topic to use, I often look at existing YouTube channels with the most popular videos. I've noticed that stories describing humans as heroes, victors, or a feared race tend to do well among the audience of HFY stories. So, I browsed around and found plenty of stories on a website called Royal Road that have received good reviews from readers.
One story that caught my eye is called "Grass Eaters" (HFY). What's great about this topic is that you can make multiple videos about the same topic. I've noticed when I analyzed the comments that many people are asking for a part 2,3 etc., and the fact that new chapters are added every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday according to the channel's schedule is a nice bonus. This way you also stay ahead of your competition and get stories that no one else has ever heard or used.
By the way, I've read carefully about how they challenge copyright claims through their support page. It seems that if you mention the story and post a link to it, there's little chance of a copyright claim. You can find more information about this on their support page here.

How to create your thumbnail?
We're going to tell a story about small grass-eating creatures challenging humanity. In many other videos, you often see a big monster in the thumbnail, with tiny humans shown defeating it. To simulate this, I use Midjourney to create these thumbnails because it gives us lots of options. Plus, when we add a new chapter, we can use different thumbnails with the same style each time to keep things interesting.
IMPORTANT:
It is important to learn how to use Midjourney because sometimes not entering a prompt the right way or using the wrong code for the size of your thumbnail will not give you the expected result. Coming up with a prompt is a task in itself, which is why you can take nice advantage of Midjourney's /describe option. You can use any image/thumbnail to make a prompt write itself. I did the same with these images.
This is the prompt I used on Midjourney's discord:
creepy horror rabbit, dark background, portrait, scary, creepy, realistic, horror movie style, scary eyes, portrait, sci-fi, space, 30k --ar 16:9.
Again let Midjourney make his own prompt
For this thumbnail, I used the following prompt:
Concept art of two human soldiers standing in front of an alien spaceship, the background is foggy and there are other spaceships floating around, the mood should be dark science fiction with sci-fi lights glowing from inside the spaceship, rendered in a hyperrealistic style.
End result
by putting these images together with the option /bend you'll get this: https://s.mj.run/5UAYxTJ_ohk https://s.mj.run/7sKbgSCsq2E fighting in a battle with humans, give the bunny with great power --ar 16:9.
Which will create this end result
AUDIENCE ANALYSIS
What does the audience like?
Sci-fi/HFY
This target audience likes to watch and listen to stories about HFY (Humans Fuck YEAH). They love to see the different sides of humans in these HFY stories, especially with humor. You can clearly see a certain pattern at our competition channel that the Humans in these stories are being highlighted in a positive way.
Stories for young and old
You wouldn't expect retirees to watch videos like this, but nothing could be further from the truth. The aspect of pulling them into the story and in this case a little nostalgic is incredibly good for your RPM and AVD. This keeps them watching the whole video and coming back for new content.
Also listening to the stories
What I've seen a lot in the comments is that people also listen to these videos instead of watching them, they use it like a podcast and by doing so more easily click on the next video. So I would definitely create playlists so people can easily listen to multiple videos when they want to, the same thing people do when listening to a podcast.

AI Mistakes
You can use AI incredibly well in this niche. Multiple channels are showing success with it. It is important to note, that AI can't do everything correctly or in the best way yet. In this particular example, at 15:45 from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ojma3XTjxuM&t=665s a few viewers can see the fun of it, but if you only listen to the video like you see in the previous comment, you'll still be pulled out of the story by this mistake. That's why we wouldn't recommend using an AI voice over in this niche, I will go into more details about that at the video analysis.
